Lapis, Pink Opal & Dalmatian Stone Earrings
These earrings are cut from a blue lapis, a pink opal and a spotted dalmatian stone. All of these materials are ocean floor rocks that have ended up on land. Lapis (Afghanistan) forms in great bands of metamorphosed limestones squeezed into a blue oblivion by the merging of India with Asia. Pink opal (Australia) is actually a radiolarian chert, the shards of microscopic silica creatures that sunk to the seafloor long ago. Dalmatian stone (Mexico) is a hydrothermally altered volcanic material that formed along plate boundaries in mid-ocean ridges. Plate techtonics thrust all these masses up onto the continents.
The stones fill a 34mmx36mm area and hang 65mm on hammered 14k gold fill wire. The earrings weigh 5 grams each.
